Retension Pharmaceuticals priced an upsized initial public offering on 8 October 2026, selling 3,750,000 shares at $12.00 — the midpoint of its marketed range — for roughly $45 million before expenses. The Falls Church, Virginia biopharma begins trading on the Nasdaq Capital Market as RTSN with a single asset in its pipeline: RTN-001, an oral PDE5 inhibitor for uncontrolled and resistant hypertension, licensed exclusively worldwide from Sanofi.

What $45 million is actually buying
Retension Pharmaceuticals is a one-asset company by design. Leerink Partners and Guggenheim Securities led the offering, with Oppenheimer & Co. also acting as bookrunner, for a company that reported no product revenue and a net loss of roughly $12 million for the twelve months ended 30 June 2026. The final prospectus ties the raise directly to finishing the ongoing Phase 2b trial and preparing a Phase 3 study, rather than to a broader pipeline.
That concentration is also the company's pitch to RA/QA-minded investors: RTN-001 is not a first-in-human molecule. The company says more than 265 human subjects have already received it across earlier studies, including two Phase 2 trials, before the current dose-finding study enrolled its first patient in October 2025.

A PDE5 inhibitor built for a different vessel
PDE5 inhibitors are not a new mechanism — they underpin erectile-dysfunction drugs and, at different doses, pulmonary-hypertension treatments, by boosting nitric oxide signaling that relaxes blood vessels. Retension's pitch is tissue selectivity: RTN-001 is designed to act preferentially on the higher-pressure vasculature relevant to systemic blood pressure, rather than the vascular beds those older uses target. The company says published Phase 2 work across more than 265 subjects supports that profile, though the current Phase 2b trial is the first study designed specifically to find the dose that carries into Phase 3.
Three things the raise is riding on
Single-asset focus
Every dollar of the $45 million is earmarked for RTN-001 — finishing the Phase 2b trial and preparing Phase 3 — rather than spread across a broader pipeline, a concentrated bet typical of a company this early.
A Sanofi-licensed mechanism
RTN-001 did not start as Retension's molecule: it passed through Surface Logix, Nano Terra and Kadmon before Sanofi held it, and Retension's team reacquired an exclusive worldwide license in 2023 rather than discovering the compound itself.
A new patent, not just a license
Retension disclosed a newly issued US patent covering RTN-001 alongside its Series B, adding its own intellectual property on top of the inherited license.
A crowded year for new blood-pressure mechanisms
RTN-001 is entering the hypertension market at an unusually active moment for new mechanisms. AstraZeneca's aldosterone synthase inhibitor baxdrostat won FDA approval in May 2026 as Baxfendy, following Idorsia's endothelin-receptor antagonist Tryvio and the 2023 re-approval of catheter-based renal denervation devices from Medtronic and ReCor Medical. Spironolactone, a decades-old generic, remains the default add-on therapy most patients try first. RTN-001's Phase 2b data, due in the first half of 2027, will be the company's first chance to show where a PDE5-based approach fits against that newly crowded field.

Regulatory News outlook
We expect the US resistant-hypertension drug market to keep compounding toward DelveInsight's $15 billion 2032 figure as newly approved mechanisms like aldosterone synthase inhibition expand the options beyond add-on generics, with RTN-001's 2027 Phase 2b readout as the next checkpoint for whether a second novel mechanism joins that list.
How we got here: DelveInsight's $9.3 billion 2019 figure compounds to its own published $15 billion 2032 estimate at roughly 3.7% a year; we treat that published growth rate as the baseline category RTN-001 would need to take share from, pending its own efficacy data.

What the trading debut doesn't answer
An IPO funds a trial; it does not report one. RTN-001's Phase 2b study is still roughly 40% enrolled, and Retension has not disclosed interim efficacy or safety data from the current dose-finding cohort. Until that readout, expected in the first half of 2027, the company's public value rests on the strength of its licensed mechanism and its earlier Phase 2 work rather than on results specific to the dose it ultimately advances.
- Enrollment: the 280-patient Phase 2b trial was approximately 40% enrolled as of 11 September 2026.
- Data timing: initial results are expected in the first half of 2027, ahead of any Phase 3 decision.
- Capital runway: the company reported a net loss of about $12 million for the twelve months ended 30 June 2026, against roughly $45 million in new gross IPO proceeds plus its existing cash.

Frequently asked questions
How much did Retension Pharmaceuticals raise in its IPO?
The company priced an upsized offering of 3,750,000 shares at $12.00 per share on 8 October 2026, for gross proceeds of about $45 million before underwriting discounts and expenses. Shares began trading on the Nasdaq Capital Market as RTSN on 9 October 2026.
What is RTN-001?
An oral, once-daily, next-generation PDE5 inhibitor designed for greater selectivity toward the vasculature tissue relevant to blood pressure, rather than the erectile-dysfunction or pulmonary-hypertension uses of older PDE5 inhibitors. Retension holds an exclusive worldwide license to it from Sanofi.
What will the IPO proceeds fund?
Completion of an ongoing Phase 2b dose-finding trial of RTN-001 in about 280 patients with uncontrolled and resistant hypertension, plus preparation for a planned Phase 3 trial. Initial Phase 2b data are expected in the first half of 2027.
Has RTN-001 been tested in people before?
Yes. The company says more than 265 human subjects have received the molecule across earlier studies, including two Phase 2 trials, predating the current Phase 2b dose-finding study that began in October 2025.
