Xbrane Biopharma's Lucamzi, a biosimilar to the retinal-disease drug Lucentis, won FDA approval on 29 October 2026 — exactly on the agency's own target decision date, and thirteen months after a Complete Response Letter over an unresolved manufacturing-site observation. It is the small Swedish biotech's first FDA approval in its eighteen-year history, for a drug it has already sold across Europe since 2023 under a different name.
Lucamzi's approval in four numbers
Figures from Xbrane's 29 October 2026 announcement and its regulatory history.
A shrinking prize, still worth winning
Ranibizumab was a multibillion-dollar franchise at its branded peak; biosimilar competition has been eroding that figure steadily since Byooviz's 2021 approval opened the category to copies. Xbrane is entering a US market that two rivals already share, and that most published forecasts expect to keep shrinking in dollar terms even as prescription volumes hold up — the ordinary arithmetic of a branded drug losing share to cheaper copies of itself.
Ranibizumab, as the forecasts see it shrinking
$2.76B → $1.82B
Global ranibizumab (branded Lucentis plus biosimilars) market, 2025 actual to 2030 forecast, as estimated by The Business Research Company (2025) and pmarketresearch (2026); both expect biosimilar price competition to keep eroding the category.

Regulatory News outlook
We expect Lucamzi to take a double-digit share of US ranibizumab volume within two years of its 2027 launch, in line with what the category's first interchangeable biosimilar achieved, rather than displacing Byooviz, Cimerli or Ranluspec outright.
How we got here: Coherus/Formycon's Cimerli reported reaching roughly a quarter of US ranibizumab volume within about a year of its 2023 launch; Xbrane has stated a similar ambition for Lucamzi. Applying a comparable, though likely more contested, share to the forecast 2030 market size implies a plausible low-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars revenue range for Lucamzi once it launches, well short of full category displacement.
Lucamzi against the ranibizumab field
| Product | Maker | US approval | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lucamzi (Xbrane / STADA) | Xbrane Biopharma, co-developed with STADA | October 2026 | Launch planned 2027, via Valorum Biologics |
| Byooviz | Samsung Bioepis / Biogen | September 2021 | Marketed; first ranibizumab biosimilar |
| Cimerli | Coherus BioSciences / Formycon, now Sandoz | August 2022 | Marketed; first interchangeable |
| Ranluspec | Lupin | June 2026 | Marketed; interchangeable |

What a manufacturing fix bought Xbrane
FDA's October 2025 Complete Response Letter did not fault the drug itself: it cited unresolved observations at one of the manufacturing sites supporting the application, a category of rejection that is common across biologics and that says nothing about a candidate's clinical performance. Xbrane resubmitted in April 2026, FDA accepted the resubmission with a new BsUFA target date of 29 October 2026, and the agency approved Lucamzi exactly on that date — the regulatory equivalent of landing a plane on schedule after a mechanical delay.
What Xbrane brings that a first-time filer can't
Three years of EU sales data
Ximluci has been on the market across Europe since early 2023, with a German launch in May 2023 and sales history Xbrane can point to that a brand-new biosimilar cannot.
A manufacturing partner already in place
STADA has co-developed and co-manufactured the product since a 2018 agreement, giving Xbrane an established supply chain rather than one built from scratch for the US filing.
A dedicated US commercial partner
Rather than building its own US sales force, Xbrane has exclusively licensed US commercialization to Valorum Biologics, a structure that shifts launch execution risk to a partner built for exactly that.

US launch targeted
Commercial launch through exclusive US licensee Valorum Biologics.
What is not yet public: Lucamzi's US list price, whether it will carry an interchangeability designation (Cimerli and Ranluspec both do; Xbrane's announcement does not claim one for Lucamzi), and the specific terms of the Valorum Biologics commercialization agreement. Regulatory News will update this page as those details are confirmed.
- US launch: targeted for 2027, through exclusive licensee Valorum Biologics; no list price has been announced.
- Interchangeability: not claimed for Lucamzi at approval, unlike Cimerli and Ranluspec — a real gap against two rivals already in the US market.
- European base: Ximluci continues to sell across Europe under the STADA partnership, giving Xbrane a revenue base independent of the US launch's timing.

Frequently asked questions
What did FDA approve for Xbrane?
Lucamzi, a biosimilar to Lucentis (ranibizumab), for wet age-related macular degeneration. The approval was announced 29 October 2026, exactly on the FDA's BsUFA target action date.
Why did this take so long?
FDA issued a Complete Response Letter in October 2025 citing unresolved observations at one of Xbrane's manufacturing sites. Xbrane resubmitted its application in April 2026, and FDA accepted it with a new target decision date of 29 October 2026.
Is Lucamzi the same drug sold in Europe?
Yes. The same product has been marketed across Europe since 2023 under the brand name Ximluci, following EU marketing authorisation in November 2022. Lucamzi is the US brand name for the same ranibizumab biosimilar, co-developed with STADA.
When will Lucamzi launch in the US?
